Hello Everyone!   

Here's what's going on in the Ham Radio community in the El Paso and Southern New Mexico area the next couple of weeks.

***** NEWS, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND OTHER STUFF *****

The West Texas Repeater Association (WTRA) Fox Hunt has been postponed due to the “Slow-10” construction and the closure of I-10 at Sunland Park on the weekends.  

The traffic congestion would make it difficult and dangerous for any Fop Hunters traveling to/from/thru the west side of El Paso.

Announcements will go out when it is rescheduled.

The National Weather Service (NWS) El Paso/Santa Teresa Office will conduct Basic SKYWARN™ Training on Friday, 18 May, from 7 to 9:30 PM at the Sun City Amateur Radio Club (K5WPH), 3790 Wickham Ave, in El Paso, TX.

The NWS encourages anyone with an interest in public service to join the SKYWARN® program.  Volunteers include police and fire personnel, dispatchers, EMS workers, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens.  Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches and nursing homes or who have a responsibility for protecting others are also encouraged to become a spotter. 

This training is free and open to the public, and typically lasts about 2 hours.  You will learn:

	Basics of thunderstorm development
	Fundamentals of storm structure
	Identifying potential severe weather features
	Information to report
	How to report information
	Basic severe weather safety

The annual Pecos Valley Amateur Radio Club Tailgate (aka “Roswell Tailgate”) is coming up on Saturday, 19 May, at 7 AM at the PVARC headquarters, 403 N. Richardson in Roswell, New Mexico.

The Sun City Amateur Radio Club (K5WPH) is having their annual BBQ Dinner at 6 PM on Saturday, May 19, at the K5WPH Clubhouse, 3709 Wickham Ave., El Paso, Texas.

Come out and enjoy some great BBQ and side dishes and desserts.  A $5 donation for all you can eat BBQ!

The El Paso Amateur Radio Club (W5ES) is holding their annual Chili Cook-off at 6 PM on Friday, 25 May, at the W5ES Clubhouse, 2100 San Diego Ave El Paso, TX.

Bring out the cast iron pot, dust off Grandma’s recipe book and stir up at least a gallon of the old family secret recipe!  First and second prizes will be awarded for Hottest Chili and Best Chili.  A $ 5.00 donation allows you to sample all the entries and vote for the chili’s you like the best.  Don’t Miss It!

The Eastern New Mexico Amateur Radio Seventh Annual Tailgate (aka “Clovis Tailgate”) is coming up on Saturday, 26 May at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 1705 W. 21st, in Clovis, NM.  

The set-up time for the Outdoor Tailgate is 7 AM, and the Tailgate starts at 8 AM.

The El Paso Amateur Radio Club (W5ES) is holding their annual Spring Auction on Saturday, May 26th at the W5ES Clubhouse, 2100 San Diego Ave El Paso, TX.

The doors open at 4:30 PM to preview the goodies, and the Auction starts at 5:30 PM.  Refreshments will be sold.

There’s a store room full of radio gear to auction off.

Bring your checkbooks and shopping list for those treasures you can’t live without.

Friday, May 18 – NWS Basic SkyWarn Training – 7 PM at the Sun City Amateur Radio Club (K5WPH) Clubhouse, 3709 Wickham Ave., El Paso, Texas.  This training is free and open to the public.

Saturday, May 19 - QCWA Luncheon Meeting - The El Paso Chapter #64 of QCWA has a monthly luncheon meeting on the third Saturday of each month at 11 AM (lunch) and 12 PM (meeting) at the Golden Corral located near the intersection of the North-South Freeway (US 54 South) and Transmountain Road (Woodrow Bean) next to the Wal-Mart store in Northeast El Paso.

Friday, May 25 - El Paso Amateur Radio Club (W5ES) Chili Cook-Off - 6 PM at the W5ES club house, 2100 San Diego.  

Saturday, May 26 - Eastern New Mexico Amateur Radio Seventh Annual Tailgate (Clovis Tailgate) – 7 AM at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 1705 W. 21st, in Clovis, NM.

***** WEEKLY EL PASO NETS *****

Sunday nights – Sunday Night on 2 Meter Sideband Net – 8 PM on 144.200 USB.

Monday evenings - El Paso D-Star Repeater Net.  Start time is 7:15 PM.  The net meets on the W5ELP 146.620 D-Star Repeater (port C).  It is also linked to Reflector 55A for this net.  All with D-STAR capability are welcome to participate.  This repeater is located on South Comanche Peak.

Monday nights – West Texas Repeater Association (WTRA) Round Table and Swapnet.  Start time is 8 PM.  The net usually alternates each week between the 146.88 solar powered repeater on North Mt. Franklin (El Paso) and the Amigo Link repeater system, but due to problems with the 146.88 solar powered repeater, the net is being held each Monday on the Amigo Link.  The Amigo Link repeater system is comprised of the following area repeaters:  146.700, 147.240, 147.280, 443.400, 444.200 in El Paso, 444.325 in Montana Vista TX, 442.825 in Canutillo TX, and the 145.230 at Benson Ridge NM.  This is an open wide area repeater system.  All Hams are welcome and encouraged to check into the net, with or without comments.  The scheduled Net Controllers are (subject to change):

If you are interested in being the Monday Night Net Control, bring it up on the net or contact Sean KD6CUB directly.  It’s fun, easy, and good practice for conducting nets. 

Tuesday nights - 10-10 Net – 8 PM on 28.445 MHz.

Wednesday nights - The WX5ELP SKYWARN Net will be held on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.  The net will begin at 6:45 PM for Luna county, we will call for your reports on the 146.82 repeater, followed with Grant county on the 145.145 repeater, then Sierra County on 146.76 repeater, and then Dona Ana county on the 146.64 repeater after the MV Net has ended.  At 7 PM check-ins will be called for by county for those that can access the Amigo Link frequencies in your local areas.  After Dona Ana County has finished we will switch over to 7246.00 MHz (LSB) or 3.876(LSB) and call for Hudspeth County check-ins.

Wednesday nights - 6 Meter net – 8 PM on 50.130 USB

Thursday nights - Multiplex Net, sponsored by the Sun City Amateur Radio Club (K5WPH).  Start time is 8 PM.  The net meets on the Amigo Link.  All licensed amateurs are welcome and encouraged to check into the net, with or without comments.

Thursday nights – New Mexico D-STAR Net – Thursday evenings at 8 PM on the 146.62 D-STAR (W5ELP) repeater, linked to Reflector 55A.
